Mr. Dan Goodwin Sr. Owner Goodwin's Spencer Street Barber Shop 3116 N 24th Street Omaha, NE 68111 | Dan Goodwin, Sr Goodwin’s Spencer Street Barber Shop is owned and operated by Dan Goodwin Sr. Mr. Goodwin founded the shop in 1955. While the shop moved a few doors down in the early 1970’s, it has essentially been in the same location on the corner of 24th and Spencer for nearly 50 years now. The shop is one of the few original shops left of the many that once lined 24th Street and Omaha’s North side during its’ hey day.
Goodwin’s Spencer Street Barber Shop is reminiscent of the historical fabric of the community and maintains much of that significance in itself. The Nebraska legislatures’ elder statesman Senator Ernest Chambers is not only a long time friend of Mr. Goodwin’s, but was also among the first of many barbers who cut hair at the shop. A segment of the historical film documentary, “A Time for Burning,” was filmed at the shop in 1968 and it featured interviews with Chambers, before his days as a senator and Goodwin also. The film was conducted by the Lutheran Church and it focuses on racial issues facing the Church and the black community. The documentary was also nominated for a Emmy and finished second in it’s category. Today, the film continues to be shown to students and others in universities, high schools, and other educational settings across the nation.
The walls of the shop also features sports clippings, awards, and photos of Goodwin’s family, friends, and other aspiring achievers, which includes his own plaques and trophies. The 70-year old is a long time health and fitness enthusiast who took up power lifting just two years ago. He is now a two time national power lifting champion and holds multiple Nebraska State records in the squat, bench press, and dead lift in the 165- pound weight class. He recently broke his own state dead lift record at the 2002 Cornhusker Games in Lincoln with a hoist of 315 pounds!
